Also, no walking
Well, no official walking. I probably went back and forth 10 times between the rooms the endpoint devices for the upgrade were in. But that's not 40 minutes, so it doesn't count. Tomorrow, then. (note: work being a royal bitch is allowed to shift the 5/7 schedule but does not exempt me from it. )

damn it
I just accidentally wiped all the pictures on my camera. And of course, I did that /after/ I'd taken down most of the christmas decorations, damn it. argh. Stupid brain used up all it's energy on a 5 hour install today. However, in the process of the install I spoke to a competent, nice, knowledgeable support tech that even gave me a back door into their software. I think I want to keep the not-very-enterprise level software just for the technical support.

Now, I think I need some tea. (What I want is a cupcake. Today deserves a cupcake. This is why I shouldn't eat all my cupcakes at once...then there aren't any left on days that deserve them.

Onward...

Vessel

"Vessel," by the phenomenal Grouper, from a recent split EP (with Roy Montgomery). Grouper’s DRAGGING A DEAD DEER UP A HILL was one of my favourite records of 2008, and this EP has basically made my night.

Scott Tuma

I discovered Scott Tuma’s work a few years ago, with a record called THE RIVER. He’s usually filed under "Americana," but I find this reductive.

This is a piece from a collaboration with Mike Weis called TARADIDDLE, just because it’s what I’ve got to hand right now, but I find it preserves what’s important about Scott Tuma. His work is powerfully strange and estranging: it smacks of mutated ground, poisoned water, rust and death. The first track off 2008’s NOT FOR NOBODY is actually kind of harrowing, in the way that recent Elegi and Svarte Greine records have been — the sound of someone in extremis in an unforgiving environment. But I seem to have misplaced that. And TARADIDDLE is a fine record. So, from it, I play you "On Cox."

I'm going to miss this place
The department-wide 'Susan is leaving' email went out yesterday. I've been slowly emailing others in my company circle about my imminent departure. One thing that's surprised me are the responses that say 'what will we do without you?' and 'you were so good at what you did - thank you for all of your support and hard work'. I'm also surprised at the amount of emails I've gotten about me leaving when they heard about it. Two I got this morning brought tears to my eyes, and I'm not even kidding about that.

Quite a number of people have come up to me to tell me that it's inspiring and good news that someone is leaving of their own volition rather than being laid off. I think it helps that I'm not leaving because I hated it here or hated my job.

xkcd cracked me up this morning:

Train Cake!
[info]whc gave me a Locomotive Pan for Christmas! Today I was finally feeling up to baking something (I've had a cold since Christmas Eve). I cheated by using the Ghirardelli cupcake mix as a base, adding sour cream and eggs per the recipe on the box. I'm not going to bother with fancy colored frosting this time, just standard chocolate cream cheese.

Question for my fellow bakers: Is there a secret for getting the cake to fill in all the nooks and crannies of this pan? I made sure to drop some batter into the larger bits but I was afraid the batter might burn in the smaller bits. I also tapped the pan on the counter, but still got some air bubbles.

(Photos to follow.)

Did not walk yesterday, and I had the last of the cupcakes, which is a double whammy against the resolution keeping, but I'm really okay with that. (I was exhausted, and slept on the couch instead of doing anything else. It was nice.) I'm planning on walking again today, and since the resolution was specifically 5 out of 7 days a week, and I haven't gotten to day 7 yet, I haven't /technically/ broken that one. And now that the cupcakes are gone, that particular temptation is out of reach. *shrugs*

Work is continuing to be busy, but the students come back Monday, which should mean no more major upgrades until Easter. Also, we have MLKjr Day off, which will be nice. :)

Tentatively planning on hosting a craft night on the 27th, probably around 7pm. Anybody interested?

Now, time for lunch. :)

Me At Marvel Digital

Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, which is where you can read a shitload of Marvel comics for between five and ten Yanqui dollars a month, is sorting their inventory by creator.

Which means there’s a Warren Ellis page on Marvel Digital.

A lot of it is, of course, appalling shit that I was hoping might disappear forever. But, on the other hand, you can spend ten bucks on joining for one month and read all of NEXTWAVE and all of my THUNDERBOLTS run (which was quite funny in places, and apparently my having the Green Goblin give monologues while naked was somewhat influential on the development of the Marvel universe or something)…

Since starting on thyroid supplemental therapy two months ago, I've lost roughly 15 pounds. I'd like to take this opportunity to look at doctors who spent four years telling me that despite being textbook symptomatic for hypothyroidism my thyroid was fine and say "I told you so. Nyah."

Upon Due Reflection...
Certain moments remind you of the utter absurdity of modern life.

The moment tonight when I found myself at the bottom of my sister's driveway in the middle of the night, toting (among other things) two live frogs, a container of pasta bolognese, and a survey history of the influence of the occult in politics written by a guy who played guitar for Blondie? Definitely one of them.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you. But I'm not sure a moment like that can ever actually be planned. And if it is, you need help. And more frogs.

Red Cliff
If Gettysburg and Return of the King decided to spend an afternoon eating pizza, drinking beer, and playing Dynasty Warriors V co-op mode, then you'd have Red Cliff.

Or, as I said to Melinda midway through one of the many lavish, gorgeously shot, hideously violent and yet positively balletic battle scenes, "This film has just achieved dangerous levels of awesomeness."

Gah. I'm pretty sure that when a patient says "it hurts to stand, it hurts to walk, please prescribe me a wheelchair," the correct answer ISN'T "we'll discuss that at your next appointment in a few weeks." *sigh* I'm trying to believe I got that response because it's the first time she's seen me and the records from GA haven't been sent yet.

On the good side, I'm under 200 pounds again. Yay! And all of my meds have been refilled. They gave me over 350 Tramadol pills--at my current rate of consumption, that's 45 days. It's the largest pill bottle I've received from a pharmacy.

I broke down and rented a wheelchair for the month. I can't get it up the stairs and into the house, but at least now I can walk the dog and use it when we go out. Thankfully it's significantly lighter than the 25-year-old hand-me-down chair mom let me borrow over the summer. It also has functioning brakes--dad broke the brakes off the old one. Now if we were just living at ground level, things would be good. That's the downside of these vacation rentals.

The EFMP paperwork should be done by my next appointment, and then we can get moved up on the housing waiting list. That will also help with getting a prescription chair, most likely a powered model.

Notebooknotes: Writing DO ANYTHING

DO ANYTHING was mostly written in a Moleskine reporter’s notepad with a propelling pencil. The page reproduced below — cranked up in GIMP to make it visible, if not legible — appears to date from late May 2009. It’s written in block caps because I needed to be able to copy-type from it, and as we know from earlier posts, my handwriting is shitty.

Pretty much every page of DO ANYTHING in this notebook looks like this:

4249700548_9f884db79d_o

If you’ve read DO ANYTHING, you know a lot of it is pretty densely layered with connections. The column was written in a very specific way to maximise the information. It always, always started out as longhand, early in the day. The longhand was always about the forward thrust of the column — the column meanders a lot, but it doesn’t wander, it’s constantly following a channel. As I go, I’m signposting things I need to check later, or need to remember to tie in.

Later, I sit down and copy-type the thing into Notepad, with a browser open, because I’m fact-checking as I go. The longhand draft is all mental, and that includes working in information from memory. Since I often can’t remember what I did yesterday, it needs to be checked.

I’d write the longhand version in intense two-hour stretches, and usually had way too much for a single column. After 003, in fact, I just kept writing without thinking about column breaks, and found those breaks later after the copy-typing.

Once I’d typed the column up, the real draft started. Because I’d then spend an hour plugging names from the column into Google, looking for more connections, as well as following my signposts, and layering that stuff into the piece. The Notepad draft after an hour or so on Google was the actual first draft, and that’s what’d get pasted into OpenOffice to get edited and cleaned up.

Really, an incredibly complicated and time-devouring process for a column no-one read. But it was fun, and it taught me things.

Melinda is still alive and well...
Christmas was spent drinking wine, but then I had to sober up so I could drive home on ice-covered roads. Suck.

New Years was spent drinking wine and playing board games with friends I love, and I did not have to drive home. Win.

It is @I#*Y$%!!!! cold here in Missouri--single-digit wind chills. Suck.

It may snow tomorrow, which means a whole day of playing Scrabble and drinking wine. Win.

Still on dial-up. Suck.
